Senior SELECT

The Senior SELECT (Student Education, Leadership, Employment, Citizenship Training) Program is a year round program for in school youth. This program begins in July and operates through June of the following year. The ages served are 16-21. Each quarter, Senior SELECT participants in all fourteen counties attend academic and life skills classes and participate in work experience activities. Work readiness skills include: creating an employment portfolio, becoming knowledgeable of labor market information, job search assistance, and career decision-making. Participants also learn how to complete financial aid applications, college admission applications, and ACT applications. Both classroom and work experience activities take place in the many small towns in the Mississippi Delta. The work experience and classroom training go hand in hand. The goal is to exercise control and make sound life decisions in the future. Activities include basic skills training, work readiness skills training, and work experience. Community service projects are performed each quarter. Quarterly guest speakers from local health departments, extension service offices, local businesses and field trips to higher education institutions, museums, the WIN Job Centers, and county municipal offices are integrated into the learning activities. Tutors are arranged for participants having academic difficulties, counseling for those in need of such, and mentors for everyone. Incentives are available each quarter for attending all classes, participating in all classes, and demonstrating positive work habits.
